Market this unique variety at farmers’ markets as it’s seldom found in retail outlets due to very little commercial production. This wonderful old Italian specialty onion is originally from Tropea, the Calabrian town in Italy known for its superb cuisine. Italian torpedo onions can be used in any stage. When pulled as baby onions, just as the stems start to swell, their beautiful, bright magenta color, mild flavor, and crunchy texture work well in salads. When they bulb up, they have an elongated torpedo shape and develop a deep pungent flavor. This variety does well in Intermediate and Long Day areas.

This onion is my son’s favorite onion so I grow it from plants I order here, and also from saved seed and I purchase more seed to start new plants each year. Some years when all the conditions are nearly perfect, this variety can grow quite large. We find they store pretty well in our arid climate, and can last at least six months hanging up in the laundry room. Though they can get a hot and spicey taste to them when stored more than 3 or 4 months. Lots of flavor and so easy to grow and maintain, I have them growing everywhere on the ranch each year.

We are loving this onion. This is the onion still thriving in the garden at this point in the season. Hope to harvest some seed this year. A most delicious and hardy addition to the gardens.
