Description

Redwing onions are the most popular long day red onion grown by commercial growers. Simply the best long day red onion grown in the Northern areas. Deep internal red color continues to develop during storage. May not do well in Southern portions on the long day areas since this is a true long day and does require at least 15 hours of daylength to bulb. Redwing onions are slightly more pungent than Red Zeppelin. Resistant to foliar disease and bolting.

I planted Red Wing in 2023. They stayed green and growing for up to a month after my other red onions. I finally had to dig them still growing due to weather. I cured them in a shop with a fan, and they did not dry down for another month. I finally had to cut the tops off and bring inside because of freezing weather. It is now Nov. and some are starting to go bad. I am at 5,000 ft. elevation in central Montana. If you have a longer growing season, they be OK for you.

I live in hardiness zone 6 (Pittsburgh, PA). Redwing onions grow great for me but just as important, they store well. I grow 7/8 different varieties of onions and the Redwings are the ones that last the longest. I braid the bunches and hang them in a barn until freezing temperatures come. I still have 3 long braids of them hanging in my basement with no signs of sprouting or spoiling (It’s now January). I highly recommend this variety.

I live in northern Maine, and we had a terrible growing season. I grew these as usual, and they still did well despite the weather swinging between extremes, although some were a bit smaller than normal. They even stored well despite the weather not cooperating. I will grow them again this year.

I grew Redwing last year and even though my chickens decided to knock them over early they are a real winner. I had to dry and store them early (thanks ladies!) but they are still nice and firm and beautiful in storage. I have had no issues with even the small ones rotting. I use them daily and look forward to having them in my garden again! I have been using Dixondale a few years now and the quality can’t be beat for the price.

These are excellent storage onions. They are also hardy. Here in northern Maine we had very terrible weather for growing, and they did just fine, although some were a bit small. They are my favorite red onion for storing.
